Dunki Movie Review: The movie starring Shah Rukh Khan is a boring dive into predictability
Dunki, a dreary mixture of tired clichés and uninspired storytelling directed by Shah Rukh Khan, is a massive cinematic blunder that begs the question of who made the decisions for this drab production.
If one may so nicely describe it, the plot consists of a patchwork quilt of stale platitudes and uninspiring scenes. With every scenario becoming more conventional and predictable than the last, any pretense of creativity is destroyed. With no redeeming features, the movie appears to take great pride in its lack of ambition, content to follow the well-trod Bollywood clichés.
The story begins slowly and follows a formulaic path from the beginning, making the audience groan through sequences that are a carbon copy of innumerable other unmemorable movies. Shah Rukh Khan’s character is a simple cardboard cutout of his more interesting past parts, and the movie doesn’t provide any novel insights or inventive ideas.
Despite their great efforts, the supporting cast is limited by shallow, uncomplicated characters. It seems as though Rajkumar Hirani pulled together an ensemble of forgettable actors and dug through the old dusty vaults of formulaic storylines. The absence of realism in the character relationships makes the audience emotionally estranged from the fictitious drama playing out on film.
Dunki is a master of inconsistent tempo. The movie meanders over long, boring sections of slow-moving narrative before suddenly cutting to hurried, badly done scenes. The film misses out on opportunities to engage the viewer and create tension because it lacks a cohesive rhythm, making it feel more like an endurance test than a fun movie.
Even if they are technically sound, the production design and cinematography don’t bring the movie to life. Similar to the storyline, the images are unoriginal and have trouble making an impact.
What was effective for me
Vicky Kaushal’s character, which was a cameo but had the potential to be a fully realized character, was the only aspect of the movie that I found engaging.
Conclusion
The one-star travesty Dunki detracts from Shah Rukh Khan’s otherwise remarkable resume. It’s a boring exercise in déjà vu in film, offering viewers nothing fresh or interesting. Fans hoping for a novel addition to Khan’s discography should brace themselves for disappointment; Dunki is an unmemorable dive into the depths of predictability that is fine left unnoticed.
