The Indian Army is playing an important role in protecting national security and territorial integrity. The Indian Army includes a powerful military force along with an arsenal of modern arms. Apart from male military officers, the participation of women in the Indian Army has also increased. Women are now protecting India from external threats on the country’s borders. Many women are serving in high positions in the Indian Army. Some women are flying powerful fighter planes in the Air Force and some are making India proud in Navy uniform. On the occasion of Indian Army Day, know about the most powerful women officers in the Army, whose indomitable courage is inspiring every woman.
First woman Lieutenant General Punita Arora
The credit for getting women a place in the Indian Army goes to Punita Arora. Punita Arora was the first Lieutenant General of the Indian Navy. He was born on 13 October 1932 in Lahore province of Pakistan before independence. In 2004, she became the first woman to be appointed to the post of Lieutenant General of the Indian Navy. Punita, who served in the Navy for 36 years, received a total of 15 medals.
Kiran Shekhawat, the first martyred woman
A woman is also included among the martyred soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. Kiran Shekhawat is the country’s first Indian woman martyr. He was born on 1 May 1998 in Sefraguwar, Rajasthan. Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat was the first woman officer to be martyred on duty after marriage in Haryana. He was recruited into the Indian Navy in 2010. A Dornier surveillance aircraft crashed in Goa on the night of 24 March 2015. Lieutenant Kiran Shekhawat was martyred in this accident.
“The security of the nation is greatly enhanced by the Indian Army. Throughout wartime, counterterrorism, counterinsurgency, and other national emergencies, the Indian Army has always acted with professionalism. President Murmu stated in her statement that “the men and women of the Indian Army have demonstrated exemplary leadership and selfless devotion, which is admirable.”
In her message, Murmu went on to say that we honour the brave heroes who gave their lives to defend our country.

“We remember and honour the brave men and women who gave their lives to defend this country today. The President declared, “The nation is united in expressing solidarity with their families, who have bravely and tenaciously endured the loss of their loved ones.”
“I wish the Indian Army continued success in all its endeavours and convey my great wishes to its gallant soldiers, veterans and their families,” said President Murmu.
Additionally, Prime Minister Modi welcomed Army personnel on Monday, praising them as pillars of perseverance and strength.
In his letter to the Indian Army, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude for the force’s contribution throughout difficult and tragic times.
“The courageous men of the Indian Army have bravely carried out their duties, whether it is fending off external threats or providing assistance during natural disasters. The Indian Army has established a reputation for itself as a disciplined and formidable force worldwide, the prime minister added.
“The country is moving quickly towards a Viksit Bharat during this Amrit Kaal. In addition to maintaining national security and stability, the Indian Army is essential to the country’s development. The Prime Minister said, “I am convinced that the country will rise to new heights by utilising this strength.”
“We celebrate the incredible bravery, steadfast dedication, and sacrifices made by our Army soldiers on Army Day. Their bravery is demonstrated by their unwavering commitment to defending our country and maintaining our sovereignty. They are pillars of strength and resilience” The PM said.
Every year on January 15th, the Indian Army observes Army Day to remember the day in 1949 when General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa succeeded the last British Commander-in-Chief, General Francis Roy Bucher, as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief following independence. (MTN)
First woman Air Marshal Padmavati Bandopadhyay
Padmavati Bandopadhyay was the first woman Air Marshal of the Indian Air Force. Padmavati Bandhopadhyay joined the Air Force in 1968 and remained ready to serve the country for 34 years. In the year 2002, Padmavati was promoted to the post of Air Vice Marshal.
Kargil Girl Gunjan Saxena
Famous Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena is also known as Kargil Girl. Gunjan Saxena had shown her strength in front of the enemies during the Kargil war. She was the first woman pilot who fought against the Pakistani army from the Indian side during the Kargil war. Gunjan Saxena has been honored with the Bravery Award.
Female Cadet Divya Ajit Kumar
Divya Ajit Kumar is the first female cadet to receive the Sword of Honour. When this achievement was registered in her name, Divya was only 21 years old. In September 2010, Captain Divya Ajit Kumar was appointed to the Air Defense Corps of the Army.
