The DRPPL press release states that residential tenements that were in operation before January 1, 2000, are eligible. Every flat will include an own toilet with built-in lighting, ventilation, hygienic features, and security. There will also be a separate kitchen.
‘Dream homes for Dharavikars’
Previously, residents of informal settlements in Maharashtra were given dwellings of 269 square feet. Since 2018, the state government has begun awarding dwellings ranging from 315 to 322 square feet. This size met the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana’s minimum area requirement for urban poor households.
“The new flats will be ideal homes for all Dharavi residents and will improve their living conditions. Every residence will embody the essence of a Dharavikar, whose goals have always paralleled those of the average Mumbaikar. “We, at DRPPL, are committed to fulfilling these dreams and aspirations while preserving the very soul of Dharavi,” said a DRPPL spokeswoman.

“The vision is to transform Dharavi into a globally connected city with commercial and industrial premises, keeping its unique entrepreneurial spirit intact,” he went on to say. The project’s goals include providing economic possibilities, futuristic education, including vocational training, improved healthcare facilities, and a high-quality lifestyle for stakeholders. It will also have community halls, recreational areas, public spaces, gardens, dispensaries, and daycare centres for children, among other facilities.
‘Navi Dharavi’
According to the press notice, ineligible residential tenements would be accommodated under the planned affordable rental housing policy, which will adhere to the Government of Maharashtra’s stated requirements. This move will take place in many “Navi Dharavis” that have been designed to accommodate the high demand for housing units. According to the spokesperson, the Navi Dharavis will be fashioned and styled similarly to the original.
The objective is to set new standards for slum rehabilitation and urban revitalization that the rest of the world can mimic and follow, he remarked. “These will be benchmarked with great practices being followed in Singapore and other advanced nations for similar habitats.”
This human-centric transformation, according to the note, is about rebuilding spaces and reinventing the very essence of community living, incorporating cutting-edge imperatives such as transportation connectivity, electricity, water, and the internet while enabling a hygienic environment with civic amenities that are benchmarked against the top in class.
