Sumit Nagal created history, became the 5th Indian man to reach the second round of Australia Open
Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal created history on Tuesday. He became the first player from the country to defeat a seeded player at the Australian Open since 1989. Nagal defeated Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the first round. Nagal registered his name in history with the victory. However, it was difficult for him to reach here. This would not have been possible without the support of India’s legendary batsman Virat Kohli. He first helped Nagal in 2017.
Nagal is the first Indian men’s player since 2013 to reach the second round of singles. Somdev Devbarman made it to the second round in 2013. For the first time since 1989, an Indian player has defeated a seeded player in a singles match at the Australian Open. Ramesh Krishnan did this in 1989. Then he defeated Mats Wilander of Sweden in the second round. Wilander was then the top player in the world in tennis rankings.

Nagal had made revelations about Kohli
In an interview, Nagal told how Kohli and his foundation supported him at a time when he had only six dollars left in his pocket. Nagal had said, “Virat Kohli’s foundation has been supporting me since 2017. I was not performing well for the last two years and was facing financial crisis. If Virat Kohli had not supported me, I don’t know what would have happened to me.
Nagal had said, “In the beginning of 2019, when I was flying from Canada to Germany after a tournament, I had only six dollars in my purse. After the help I was getting, there were only six dollars. Imagine in this situation. How much trouble I must have been going through, but I survived and things are getting better. If people fund athletes, it will help sports to flourish in the country. I am lucky that I got support from Virat. ”
Nagal in the second round of Australian Open for the first time
Nagal has been able to advance for the first time since the first round of Australian Open. In 2021, the Indian star suffered a 2-6, 5-7, 3-6 defeat at the hands of Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis in the opening round. However, Nagal has played in the second round of a Grand Slam event before. Nagal did so at the 2020 US Open, where he lost to second seed Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.
